Out in the hallway five minutes later, I turned to Kelly. "She's definitely a strong suspect."

"Absolutely," my co-leader agreed.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

"The modus operandi is different. I mean, who kills someone with a monkey?" Kelly said once we got in the car.

"You'd be surprised." I started it up. "When I was a spy, I saw that kind of thing all the time. I'm sure there are more, but off the top of my head, one used a lion, another used a kangaroo, and one used a salamander."

"A salamander…" Kelly gave me a look. "Oh! Because it was poisonous!"

"Well sure, salamanders can be poisonous, but that's not what killed Pedro. It's classified still, but let's just say that some people are actually allergic to salamanders. At any rate, Doris has got a history with killing someone. That makes her a suspect."

Kelly considered this. "Moody was threatening her livelihood. And he changed his mind the same way and same night he did the girls."

"I just don't know. I mean, we've known Doris, sort of, for a while now. Does she strike you as the type who'd kill to keep her business going?"

"Maybe we should be asking who condemns a building for a leaky faucet?" Kelly responded.

I pulled out my cell. "I can't believe I'm doing this. But we need to know more about that condemnation."

Betty answered on the first ring and agreed to get me Moody's original report. When we arrived at the haunted house, she handed it to me on the steps.

"How did you do this so fast?" Kelly looked suspicious.

"I have access to some city hall records on my phone. It's useful for…stuff. And we have a printer inside. The Kaitlyns are working on ticket design."

She went inside, and Kelly and I sat down on the porch to look over the form. It seemed pretty average until we got to the part where he condemned Sugar Lips'. In his own handwriting, Moody said that Doris had been difficult and wasn't forthcoming when he questioned her. He thought she might be mentally unstable, because for some reason she mentioned "Trevor" and "the monkey" more than once. The leaky faucet was dangerous, Moody wrote, because eventually it could lead to a flood, which could lead to the collapse of the entire building on top of customers.

"Doris threatened him," I pointed out. "He just didn't know it."

"I can't imagine any other reason she'd mention Trevor and the monkey," Kelly agreed.

I re-read the document. "Moody's argument for condemning the building seems very thin. It's like saying that you can't go on a hot air balloon ride because you might run into a sharp church spire someday."

"Do you think he wrote that because he didn't like her?" Kelly asked.

"Hey!" Caleb called from the sidewalk. "I was driving by, spotted you, and thought I'd check on how the haunted house is going, if that's okay!"

Kelly's eyebrows went up, and I explained.

"The troop is in there now." I motioned to the door. "We were just coming to check ourselves."

We walked in to chaos.
